Psychotherapist in Pacific Palisades, CA–Areas of Specialization
Feelings of inadequacy and loneliness can make our day-to-day existence a painful struggle. These emotions are usually the result of either a singular traumatic event or a lifetime of hurtful occurrences.
As a result, a “not good enough” sense of self evolves over time and may lead to dysfunctional behaviors that are often used as coping mechanisms to deal with difficult life challenges.
Eating disorders, self-harm, and perfectionism are simply a few on a long list of behaviors that are used to control, distract, or numb one’s self in order to get through the day.
As we know too well, these dysfunctional coping mechanisms only provide temporary ease. Before we know it, our demons are back as unwanted guests, cluttering our minds and hearts with negative thoughts and feelings.
Unresolved life experiences that range from single traumatic events (natural disaster, rape, untimely death, accidents, etc.) to traumatic events that repeat over and over again (sexual abuse, bullying, peer rejection, emotional abuse, neglect, divorce, adoption, medical conditions or injuries, and other types of losses) all wreak havoc on a person’s quality of life.
